Theoretical Understanding

According Broling (1989) "life skills is the interaction of various knowledge and skills that are very important are owned by someone so that they can live independently". Broling classifying life skills into three groups, namely skills; daily living skills (daily living skills), life skills personal / social (personal / social skills) and life skills work (occupational skill).
Daily living skills (daily living skills), among others, include: managing personal needs. Personal financial management, management of private homes, health awareness, safety awareness, management of food-nutrition, clothing management, personal awareness as citizens, management of leisure, recreation, and environmental awareness.


While that is included in the working life skills (occupational skill), includes, skill employment, perencahaan work, preparatory work skills, training skills, mastery of competencies, running something profession, awareness to master various skills, the ability to master and apply technology, design and implement work processes, and produce goods and services.

WHO (1997) gives the sense that life skills are skills / ability to be able to adapt and behave positively, which allows one to face the demands and challenges of everyday life effectively. WHO classifying life skills into five groups, namely: (1) self-knowledge skills (self-awareness) or personal skills (personal skills), (2) social skills (Social skills), (3) thinking skills (thingking skills), ( 4) academic skills (academic skills) and (5) proficiency honesty (Vocational skills).

From the foregoing, it can be formulated that the essence of life skills education in non-formal education is an attempt to improve the skills, knowledge, attitudes and abilities that allow citizens to learn to live independently. In the implementation of life skills education is based on the principle of the Four Pillars of Education, which is "learning to know" (learn to acquire knowledge followed by "learning to learn" is to learn to know how to learn). "Learning to do" (learning to be able to do / do the job), "learning to be" (learn in order to become a useful person in accordance with their talents, interests and potential) and "learning to live together" (learning to live together with other people).


Life skills education is basically an educational effort to improve the life skills of every citizen. Definition of life skills are skills possessed by someone to dare to face the problems of life and natural life with no feeling depressed, then proactively and creatively search for and find a solution, so that eventually able to cope.

Operationally, the program of life skills in non-formal education was elected four jensi namely:

1. personal skills (personal skills), which includes the skill to know yourself, rational thinking skills, and confidence.

2. social skills (social skills), such as cooperation skills, tolerant, and social responsibility.

3. Academic skills (academic skills), such as proficiency in scientific thinking, doing research, and experiments with the scientific approach.

4. vocational skills (vocational skills) is a skill that is associated with certain occupations that are in the community. Such as in services (workshop, sewing), and the production of certain goods (livestock, agriculture, plantation).

The fourth type of life skills above, based on the spiritual prowess, namely; faith, piety, moral, ethical and noble character as one of the practice of the first principle of Pancasila. Thus, life skills education directed at human pembentuka noble, intelligent, skilled, healthy, self-contained and has a productivity and a high work ethic.

Implementation of life skills education in units and non-formal education programs, particularly in the context of poverty alleviation and unemployment reduction is more emphasis on learning efforts that can provide income (learning and earning).

Therefore, the implementation of life skills education with a "broad based education (BBE)" on the path of non-formal education (Malik Fajar, 2001), characterized by:

1. Ability to read and write functionally, both in Indonesian and one foreign language (English, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and others).
2. The ability to formulate and solve problems encountered through the learning process of critical thinking and the scientific, research, discovery and creation.
3. The ability to calculate with or without the help of technology to support both the capabilities mentioned above.
4. The ability to utilize various technologies lapangang diversity of life (agriculture, fisheries, animal husbandry, handicrafts, kerumahtangga, healthcare, information communications, manufacturing and industry, trade, the arts, and sports).
5. The ability to manage natural resources, social, cultural and environmental
6. Ability to work in teams in both the formal and informal sectors.
7. Ability to understand themselves, others and the environment.
8. Ability strive continuously and became a man of learning and learners
9. Ability to integrate education and learning with the nation's socio-religious ethics based on the values ​​of Pancasila.
